I think it's been about 2 years since I last uploaded anything, eh sorry about that!

I don't take as many photos as I used to but perhaps reactivating my account will motivate me.

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 8, 2009, 1:44 PM
I haven't uploaded much lately and haven't been taking many photos.  I'm a little fed up of creating mindless pretty work and want to do something a bit more meaningful.  I can do cute macro shots well but I don't think they're my best work and it makes me sad when shots I put no thought into get lots of :+fav:s and featured in everyone's journal and those I put lots of work and soul into don't even get critiqued :(
I'm sure a lot of you feel this way about your work.

So here are some of my personal favourites - you may have commented on them already but if not, I'd love it if you took the time to let me know what you think:

SitBack.... and watch your images get ripped?

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 23, 2009, 6:20 AM
Since I've been away dA has changed yet again and I'm taking a while to get used to it all.  So far it all looks good and seems to work pretty well.  However Ptollemy just made me aware of one of dA's new applications which could be aiding copyright infringement of your deviations.

The new application is called SitBack and it allows you to view your gallery as a slideshow.  In theory I think it's a great idea.  However, dA will automatically provide this code allowing people to embed the slideshow anywhere, ie outside of DA.  To those of you who already have to watermark, downscale and use TinEye to stop people ripping your images, I'm sure you'll realise that something like this is going to make life even harder for you.

There is no option at the minute to turn this feature off and it is not password protected so anyone can embed your images anywhere on the web.

I hate watermarking images but I think I'm going to have to start unless dA brings in the ability to disable SitBack and I'd advise you all the do the same.

For more information, to see SitBack in action or to let dA know what you think of it, see forum.deviantart.com/devart/su…

Now... time to feature some more of my watchers - we're nearly at the end of the list! :D

Nooze!

Journal Entry: Sun Nov 16, 2008, 3:23 PM
Well, more snooze than nooze - winter tends to make me very sluggish and sleepy.  If only I could hibernate til the end of February!

Still looking for a job, I've applied for a few shop jobs - I think what I'd like to do is start small and work my way up.  My current job is only 10 hours a week, has no opportunities for promotion and I haven't had a raise since I started (over a year ago).  I don't really enjoy it and am struggling just to keep my car running.  I want to be able to move out of this bedroom someday!  I'm going to Nottingham in 3 weeks and am hoping it won't cost me much, otherwise I don't know how I'm going to afford Stephen's Christmas present!

I am looking forward to Christmas though - I get to spend proper time with my family and it's the only time of year that my dad lights the fire!

Time to feature some more of my watchers - why?  To thank you all for your comments, critique and support that's why! :D

My my my

Journal Entry: Sun Nov 2, 2008, 4:34 PM
My my my, all you lovely people have been so busy creating beautiful art and I feel like it's been decades since I've done anything :( Sorry I haven't been active here lately, I'm still watching!
I applied for my job as co-ordinator for the NI Theatre Association and didn't get it... so I'll be looking at other jobs more seriously now.
We moved out of our studio yesterday and Friday - I fell down the grate metal stairs whilst carrying a box of stuff on Friday and messed my knees up.  I could hardly walk on Friday but starting to feel better - got lovely black and purple bruises on both legs.

In other news, I've become a nerd... got myself a library card and can't seem to stop reading!  Also, I'm going to Nottingham at the end of the month to see Owain and Jolene, can't wait! :boogie:

Quick Update

Journal Entry: Tue Oct 7, 2008, 9:16 AM
Working on getting a new/extra job at the minute, my current one is handy but I'm not even making enough money to get by, let alone to be able to save for the future.  We are moving out of our studio next month and going to work from home.  I need to start work on my tax return :(

In more positive news, I'm hoping to get over to England and Scotland for a marathon weekend at the start of November - if you're in and around Glasgow or Nottingham (and possibly London, Birmingham or Bristol) give me a shout!

I'm also about to start work on my entry for Eiccatoppinenitis's drawing competition :w00t:

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 30, 2008, 11:51 AM
I think it's been about a month since I last posted or said much on here.  I would like to tell you that now I'm back everything is fine and dandy but I'm still getting a hold on things.  My best friend is back from uni until she goes travelling in January and it's been great having her around to keep me sane.

So I probably won't be commenting or posting journals as much as I used to - that doesn't mean I'm not watching and loving all the great work you're all creating :blowkiss:

Aaaanyway, this is my non-commital way of saying I'm taking a break from dA for a while.  I'll still be watching and running PortraitClub but that's pretty much it.  If you want or need me for anything just send me a note and I'll get back to you.

Strawberry Surprise

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 24, 2008, 6:32 AM
When I started messing around with strawberries the other night I thought to myself (as I do with all photoshoots), "I'll upload my favourite one or two and see what people think."  Within 12 hours my photo Straw Barry Meets His Maker had 180 favourites and now, just 36 hours later, it has over 700 and I have gained about 20 new watchers.  Cannibalism is also set to become my 2nd most popular photograph.  No deviation of mine has ever even been half as popular as these too.  Thank you all - I especially appreciate those of you who have taken the time to look at my other photographs too :blushes:

I'm in a bit of a spin about it - I have shyed away from success and popularity all my life. I enjoy it but feel guilty for it and get incredibly embarrassed when people compliment me.  I only ever attended one school prizegiving in my life when my mum made me go and once burst into tears when I won a game of Monopoly.  Yes, I'm weird.

A few people who I would consider friends on here have become popular and completely changed for the worse because of it - when you have hundreds/thousands of watchers telling you you're awesome it's easy to become lazy and start believing that you are God's gift to photography.  I decided I was only going to submit those 2 strawberry photos because I didn't want to become a one track record but then julietcaesar said "Why stop something that everyone likes, and you like to do too?" and I think she was right.

So... there will be more fruit pictures coming soon.  I have a few ideas up my sleeve.  But I'll only be submitting the ones that I think are good enough.  Once I run out of ideas it'll back to my "boring" usual work ;)

Wedding Photography Advice Needed!

Journal Entry: Thu Aug 21, 2008, 10:27 AM
We've just been asked to do a quote for a wedding in September 09.  I have the price for the actual photography, post-production and behind the scenes work worked out but I wondered if you guys had any advice on the actual package?  Ie, where we should source the albums (I would love to make my own but I don't have the time and energy), how to give the client choice of album (I was thinking of choosing a stockist and then either getting a ream of their catalogues or making my own catalogue), how many photos to guarantee them and anything else we need to charge for that I might have forgotten... :faint:

:headbang: Metallica were AWESOME! :headbang:
Definitely in the Top 3 concerts I've ever been to along with Apocalyptica and Judas Priest.  It was outdoors which was fun although I turned up to work today with my jeans caked in mud! :giggle:  And they had fantastic pyrotechnics: flamethrowers and fireworks and at the start of 'One' there were explosions on stage to go along with the sound effects.  People say they're not as good as they used to be but I was well and truly impressed, (apart from Lars occasionally drowning out the guitars on the double-pedals) the playing was really clean and James's voice has got better with age.

I'm really tired so I won't say much more!

The Yaaargh is Nearly Over!

Journal Entry: Sun Aug 3, 2008, 7:52 AM
Things are starting to calm down... sort of.  On Monday our little nephew finally decided it was about time he showed his face so we had to look after Grant while Elaine was in hospital.  Baby Max is very cute and yesterday I snapped a few photos when I was out visiting - there'll be 1 or 2 uploaded soon :aww:

Grant and I went to the Castle Capers at Tully Castle - basically a country show with dog shows, highland dancing displays, silver band etc.  And not to be forgotten, an archery display which Stephen was involved with.  It rained lots but Grant and I had a whale of a time and it was a good excuse to jump in lots of puddles :XD:

I went to a gig on Friday night - first time since Halloween, yikes!  The crowd was fairly small but it was nice because it was nearly all people I know - I do tend to get intimidated by tons of people I don't know.  I really enjoyed it.  Momma's Slippers were playing - poor FunkyJo's fingers were bleeding from playing the bass by the end of it - Jo, I hope your poor fingers are better!

I enquired with the local papers about the cost of advertising for CreativeCaptures - one was about what we expected and the other one was ridiculously expensive.  Needless to say we chose the former and are going to be doing an advertising feature with them in the next few weeks.  I did get a deal on a wedding feature from the other paper though - we don't really like wedding photography but I thought it was a good opportunity to get our name out there.  So that's going out this week - let's hope and pray it gets us some business!

Nothing else wild or exciting with me - I know when Quantum of Solace comes out I will get talked into going to see it so I thought I'd better watch Casino Royale.  What can I say, I have seen many many James Bond films but really this was the first one I enjoyed.  Daniel Craig makes a much more believable Bond - cold-hearted and cocky... and less camp than all the others!

Oh and I went to see the Dark Knight last week too - uh WOW! :faint:  I wasn't as impressed with Christian Bale as I usually am but Heath Ledger stole the show so I wasn't left disappointed.  Oscar nomination?  I think so.  I also think Aaron Eckhart did a great job and should get a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.  Definitely the best Batman since the first one and Batman Returns.

Okay, enough from me - it's very hot here, the sun is straming in through the skylight so I'm off to get a drink and edit photos from the gig!  :blowkiss:

Sorry I haven't had time to comment, :+fav: or submit lately - I'm sooooper busy!
Umm soo what's new... my sister-in-law is very very pregnant and past her due date so we're waiting patiently for our new nephew to decide to show his face :giggle:
It was my birthday on Thursday - I'm now the grand old age of 22!  Eek!  I got some fandabidosi birthday presents: mole2k got me lots of bath bombs from Lush and a Mr Frosty slushie-maker (I'm a big child at heart :XD:).  I got some cookbooks, a mini-greenhouse for my plants and.... METALLICA TICKETS! They're playing at Marlay Park in August with Tenacious D, I can't wait! :excited:

Nothing else new but I'm going to see the Dark Knight tonight - I've heard it's fantastic :D

How are all of you? :)

What's New
I'm doing some gig photography on Friday night for the first time since Halloween.  It's in a pub with really bad lighting and I'm meant to be providing a shot for the newspaper so wish me luck.  Stephen has a cutthroat razor so we'll hopefully be doing some Sweeney Todd-esque shots soon.  Oh and we're in the middle of trying to come up with some advertising.  Right now I'm designing a "Back to School" money off coupon for the newspaper to drum up a bit of interest while we work on longer term marketing.  What fun!

Gorgeous Finns and Prints for Sale

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 22, 2008, 7:29 AM
Lol firstly, the gorgeous Finns are not for sale :giggle: I'm talking about my Apocalyptica photos of course:
I'm pretty proud of them given the conditions they were taken in and I've been amazed by the great response I've got but there's been frustration too...
It comes everyday when I look through my message centre to find comments that say "I freakin love this band..." and that's it.
If you're going to leave a comment on my photo at least tell me what you think of the actual photo! :shakefist:  Honestly, I would much rather have someone say, "I hate Apocalyptica but I like this shot because..." or "You could've improved this by..." than leave a meaningless comment on my photo just because they like the band.
Does anyone else have this happen to them?  Lately I've started replying with, "that's nice but what do you think of the photo?" in an effort to gain critique and stay polite but it's really grating on me.  Because it's Apocalyptica, they're being ripped and used on the internet more than my other photos too

Print Sale :D

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 14, 2008, 11:49 AM
Those of you who watch me will know I pretty much live in constant poverty.  Stephen and I manage to pay for the important things by forsaking social life and luxuries.  But it means if you want to buy something expensive that I have to save for months, even years!
I was going through some stuff last night and found a bunch of prints I got done for various portfolios that I don't need anymore and I've decided to sell them off.

So here goes!  I have one 9x6" copy of all the pictures below (but am willing to print more if people want) and am selling them mounted for £15 each.  If you want one, please send me a note!  To sweeten the deal I'm giving anyone who buys one a feature too.

I accept payment by Paypal - just ask for details :D

Eh hello!
Sooo... I feel like I've been living in the twilight zone a bit.  I've been kinda sick on and off which is a pain because I like to keep busy and haven't been able to do much.  I've also been feeling kinda down - all my friends who have come home from uni have plans involving each other... but not me.  It's times like these I'm thankful I have all you guys and my sweet mole2k
Despite being broke I went to see Hancock and Kung Fu Panda this week - I usually only go to the cinema two or three times a year :P  Both excellent films!

Have a Break...

Take a Break...
I realised I don't think I told anyone I was going to France, apart from my members on PortraitClub.  Well I'm back now :P
I didn't take many photos while I was away and the ones I did take were crap.  I have 3 that I'm happy of, the best of these is the one of the eagle that I submitted.  I looked through my gallery tonight and thought, almost a year on this account and this is all I have?  I must admit I've been envying some of my dA friends lately, especially those whose work is coming along and improving.  A while back I started a word document of photo ideas - it's continually grown and yet I haven't executed a single one of them.  I also picked out 20 songs to create photos to and haven't started it.
So I think I'm going to take a break from submitting and photography except for work related to these ideas.  Proper concepts and hard work.  I'm also going to try and get back into my old love, music photography.  Not only for the photos but because I've missed the music and admittedly neglected some of my friends from the music circles.
Anyway, wish me luck.
Consequently, if you're in anyway local (ie Northern Ireland or border counties of the Republic) and interested in helping out or modelling for a photoshoot or if you have a band please get in touch.  I'd love to collaborate, no matter how experienced (or inexperienced) you are :)

On a completely unrelated note, I just finished reading 'Are YOU Dave Gorman?' and I definitely recommend it.  One of my favourite books to date.

And now to feature 3 of my favourite young artists at the minute:

First off is :iconhalohid:
What can I say about Fleur?  She's a beautiful girl from Australia and a lady of many many talents, not to mention a real sweetheart.  Whether it's her photos, her modelling or her writing - Fleur is a joy to watch.  If only I could feature more!

Next comes :iconcanuckgurl22:
I've watched Alyssa since I came home from Canada.  I missed the scenery and a search for "White Rock" resulted in me finding her beautful gallery.  Since then I have always tried to support her in whatever way I can as I think she's a great talent.  At only 19, her gallery is really impressive and recently she's branched out into professional work.  I'd like to wish her the best of luck!

And last but not least :iconlord-dip:
Dipesh had been giving me great feedback on my deviations and journals for a long time before I realised I hadn't looked at his gallery :blushes:  Now I am an avid watcher.  His gallery ranges from vivd depictions of busy city life to serene still life and macro shots but why not take a look for yourself?

And that's it from me :salute:

My 20 Theme Challenge

Journal Entry: Thu Jun 5, 2008, 7:38 PM
As well as working on a couple of photo-manipulations, I found this in fluffyvolkswagen's journal and think it might be a good way to re-inspire myself.  Good excuse to listen to some good music too!

1) Start your music player in randomize mode.
2) Get anything that will let you write the song titles down.
3) Randomize 14 (I'm doing 20, you don't have to) songs, writing the titles down for all of them.
4) Then, you make 14 different pictures, each somehow relating to one of the songs.
5) Post the list somewhere public and keep it updated as you go.
6) When you finish, tell vilhelmina about it, and she'll add you to her list. :)
When randomizing, if you come across a song you don't like at all, or for whatever reason don't think would be suitable to draw/photograph something related to, just skip it. This is supposed to be fun.  Try not to skip TOO many songs though, we still want to keep some kind of randomized feeling :D

Here are my 20 song:
1.) Come Back to Camden - Morrissey
2.) Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode
3.) Weak As I Am - Skunk Anansie
4.) The Certainty of Chance - The Divine Comedy
5.) Asleep - The Smiths
6.) Pierrot the Clown - Placebo
7.) I'll Take the Rain - REM
8.) El Tango de Roxanne from Mouline Rouge Soundtrack
9.) Melissa - The Allman Brothers Band
10.) Ride On - Christy Moore
11.) Fuel - Metallica
12.) Black - Pearl Jam
13.) Join Me in Death - HIM
14.) Unforgiven II - Metallica (hopefully going to see them in August :XD:)
15.) Last Dance - The Cure
16.) Driven Under - Seether
17.) Gates of Dawn - Secret Garden
18.) The Point of No Return from The Phantom of the Opera
19.) You Can Close Your Eyes - James Taylor
20.) An Afternoon's Debauchery - David Gray

What a Week!

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 1, 2008, 2:58 PM
Those of you who know me will know I haven't been producing many photographs lately, I haven't been feeling overly inspired and the little work I have produced hasn't been of a great standard.  And last week I was nearly thinking of packing it in and deleting my account... not great for someone who's just set up a photography business!

I should warn you, this journal will be full of complaining... and probably swearing ;)

First of all, I had my first unpleasant comment last week.  You'll all know that I believe in constructive criticism and will defend any of my friends who get abuse.  This wasn't abuse, just useless criticism, on this photo:
Trapped at Midnight by finkycake
All they said was "Such poor quality " so I asked how I could improve and they continued to tell me the photo was sh*t and that I shouldn't be using iso 1600.  Well, I know iso 1600 isn't desirable but under the circumstances I had no choice as I didn't have a tripod.  I looked at the guy's gallery and honestly I didn't think much of his work but I wasn't going to get personal.  So I agreed with some of the points he made, it definitely isn't one of my best pieces but told him I thought he was being harsh and I hoped he at least had something nice to say about the rest of my gallery.  And that got it sorted, in fact he added one of my other photos to his :+fav:s.  Problem solved.

That was fine but it added to my paranoia that my work is sh*t.  Recently I reduced my gallery to about half the size, dumping all the shots I don't like into Scraps.  Then on Friday, came the news that my application for a Licentiateship with the Royal Photographic Society had been rejected.  I'm still pretty upset about this as I have seen some portfolios that have got in that were a pile of crap.  Also, the RPS gives out Licentiateships free to photography degree students - to think that if I lived in England I could do a degree in photography and get in no matter how crap my shots were, whereas living here there is only one uni that does the degree, I can't afford to do it and my hard work was rejected.
This is my portfolio:
Livin' On the Edge by finkycake Looking Out Over Wilderness by finkycake Delicate by finkycake Snowdrops by finkycake Evening at Lake Louise II by finkycake
Mute Swan by finkycake Blowin' in the Wind by finkycake Slipping Away by finkycake L'eau by finkycake A Slice of Heaven by finkycake

I now also realise that a series of shots that flow well would've been better than just selecting my best work.  Will I re-apply?  I don't know but I'm thinking no.  I'll see what the sheet from the judges says and perhaps come up with a series using my images from Canada but knowing a bit more about the LRPS I now realise they've de-valued it by offering it for free.

And finally... we were meant to go to Rathlin Island at the weekend to take photos and see the puffins.  I've been having trouble with my bank lately, they've been charging me overdraft fees when I haven't been overdrawn and they've ballsed up our rent payment for the studio several times.  First they took the money (£220!) out of someone else's account in April, then they completely messed up the payment for May.  So I've ended up making 3 rent payments for April, May and June in the space of 3 weeks.  Having thought the payments were taken care of, I was quite lax with my money and it now turns out I'm going to be overdrawn and most likely, the cheque I had to write for the May payment will bounce :(  This is just my personal account.  We applied for a business account 7 or 8 weeks ago and with one thing and another it's still not open.  We have 2 cheques from jobs that we can't lodge, therefore we have no money :(  So that's why we couldn't go to Rathlin, but we will go in July hopefully.
For now, here are some other nice pictures from there by NI artist younghappy:

Enough complaining for now ;)  Any advice on re-inspiring myself?

Note: This is abridged from a previous journal of mine.

Here's a little advice on making deviantArt a happier place... :boogie:

First and foremost is respect.  I don't shoot artistic nudes but a number of my friends do and the abuse they get is unbelievable.  Some people can't (or refuse to) see the difference between artistic nude and offensive tat.  Remember these people are trying to create art and for many of them it takes a lot of courage to bare all for the camera.

As for the people who do upload offensive or copyrighted material, if you see inappropriate submissions on dA, report them.  People's reactions tend to be to pelt abuse at the perpatrator and this might make you feel better but it's pretty futile.  dA have pretty clear rules on what is offensive and what is not and if you report something that breaks these rules they will remove it for you.  For more on the difference between fine art and porn, see the news article from the wonderful Rosie: news.deviantart.com/article/48…

Respect obviously applies to all the categories of submission, not just artistic nudes.  Again, if you don't like something you don't really need to verbally harrang the artist.  Either tell them how you think they could improve it or if it's inappropriate, report it.

Whilst I respect your right to submit what you like, think about what deviantART means.  It's all in the bloody name!  People seem to forget that this isn't Photobucket.  This is a site for sharing and promoting ART, not your drunken nights out.

This applies to journals and news articles too.  People read your journal to see what's new with you, hear news and maybe see features of artists they haven't seen before.  They don't exist for you to write cryptic, attention seeking crap.  Everyone has their own view on this but unless you're announcing competition winners or something on a similar vein, I don't believe in filling news articles with thumbs either.  News articles are for news, announcements and articles that will be helpful to the dA community.  If you want to feature someone who has impressed you, do so in your journal.

When it comes to submissions, it's your choice but I personally can't stand it when people take a photo, then decide to post every single possible version of it.  Photo.  Photo B&W.  Photo Inverted.  Photo square crop.  You get the idea.  I don't know about other people but if I log-in and see 3 or 4 different versions of a picture, I usually won't look at any of them.  Pick your favourite and upload it.

Lastly (I hope), remember it's not about pageviews.  Some people have more friends, comments and pageviews when they post journals full of features (of other people's work).  Their work may be sub-standard and yet they will have more :+fav:s because they are constantly looking for attention.  I see people complaining a lot that the exposure some artists get, especially when it comes to Daily Deviations is unfair, of course it is when people abuse the system like this.

Remember, most of us are here for the same reason, to share our work and appreciate that of others.

Over and out :salute:

So... over at PortraitClub I ran a contest with the theme being that all the entries had to be portraits of children.  And here are the winners! :excited:
